Film Studies - The Curious Theatre Company

Film Studies

Support for coursework and exams

Analyse & create films with teachers who work in the industry

Film Studies is one of the most underrated subjects out there. It teaches young people how stories, told through images and sound, shape the world and once they learn how to ‘read’ a film properly, they never watch one the same way again. At Curious, lessons are visual, modern and genuinely fun. No dusty theory. No essay panic. Just clear explanations, smart resources and a teacher who is both academically sharp and creatively wired and loves her subject (and an award-winning screenwriter).

GCSE Film Studies is perfect for bright thinkers, visual learners, creatives, introverts, anxious students and home-ed kids who come alive when they can analyse, create or decode things.

What the course involves

  • Analysing key set films across genres and cultures
  • Understanding cinematography, editing, sound & representation
  • Creating practical coursework (short film or screenplay)
  • Preparing for the final written exam

How Curious helps

Lessons are packed with:

  • Film clips (interesting ones)
  • Exemplar work
  • Visual notes & knowledge organisers
  • Quizzes and scene breakdowns
  • Step-by-step exam coaching

Students learn to see like a director and write like a critic, building real analytical skill without losing any creative spark.

Why Curious works

  • I’ve taught WJEC Film Studies for years, I know what the examiner really wants
  • My resources are visual, modern and completely jargon-free
  • Ideal for anxious learners, home-ed students, or anyone who gets overwhelmed in big classes
  • Lessons feel like creative coaching – not school

Once you learn to read a film properly, you never watch one the same way again.

A Level Film Studies

A Film Studies - The Curious Theatre Company

Dig deeper into cinema

From ideology to mise-en-scène

Smart, visual lessons to sharpen essays and elevate coursework

Tailored to WJEC

A Level Film goes bigger: bigger ideas, deeper analysis, sharper writing- but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

At Curious, lessons blend academic precision with creative insight, helping students write stronger essays and produce coursework that actually has flair.

What the course involves

  • In-depth study of British, American & global cinema
  • Theoretical frameworks (ideology, narrative, spectatorship, auteur theory)
  • NEA coursework: short film or screenplay with research investigation
  • Advanced essay writing & exam prep

How Curious helps

  • Clear visual explanations of theory (without the headache)
  • Coursework guidance: planning, storyboarding, writing
  • High-level essay modelling (examiner expectations made human)
  • Supportive, calm sessions perfect for anxious or stuck students
  • Modern examples & film choices students care about

Why Curious is different

My background is both practical and academic: actor, director, writer, teacher, I understand performance, story structure, camera language, audience theory and how to connect all of that to top-grade analysis.

Students say Curious lessons feel calm, supportive and conversation-based, not lecture-based. Perfect for young people who’ve lost confidence or who don’t thrive in traditional classrooms.
